Demon Skepticism and Non-Veridical Concepts
نویسنده
چکیده
In The Matrix, the celebrated movie premised on a brains-in-a-vat scenario, there is an interesting conversation among “the rebels”, i.e., persons living in the devastated physical world of the 22 nd century, who originally acquired their concepts in the virtual reality of “the Matrix”, a computer program feeding artificially generated humans, nurtured in complete sensory isolation from physical reality, the virtual experiences of 21 st century America as we know it. The conversation concerns what the artificial peptide goo served for dinner tastes like. The suggestions range from runny egg to Tasty Wheat to snot. But it soon turns out that the main concern is not that one of the interlocutors makes an error in judgment in the sense that what he deems, say, Tasty Wheat taste is really oatmeal, or chicken, or tuna taste. Rather, the concern is that the interlocutors literally have no idea of Tasty Wheat taste or chicken taste or tuna taste, or of genuine chicken or real tuna, for that matter. Having acquired their concept of, say, chickens in the virtual reality of the Matrix, in complete cognitive isolation from a real world that at least used to be populated by real chickens, this concept can only represent the virtual objects of this virtual reality, whatever those are, but not the real objects of physical reality.

SCHAFFER’S DEMON by NATHAN BALLANTYNE AND IAN EVANS
Jonathan Schaffer (2010) has summoned a new sort of demon – which he calls the debasing demon – that apparently threatens all of our purported knowledge. We show that any debasing skeptical argument must attack the justification condition and can do so only if a plausible thesis about justification is false. Jonathan Schaffer (2010) has summoned a new sort of demon – what he calls the debasing ...

متن کاملStructuralism as a Response to Skepticism
A classic argument for skepticism about the external world runs as follows. First: we cannot know that the evil-demon hypothesis is false, where the evil-demon hypothesis says that all of our sensory experiences have been produced by an evil demon. Second: if we cannot know that the evil-demon hypothesis is false, we cannot know we have hands. Conclusion: We cannot know we have hands. Generaliz...
متن کاملKant and Skepticism
I. In this paper I want to sketch an account of the role of skepticism in Kant's critical philosophy.1 The critical philosophy set forth in the Critique of Pure Reason (henceforth: the Critique) grew from and responds to a complex set of philosophical concerns. Among these two of special importance are concerns to address skepticism and to develop a reformed metaphysics. This much is widely rec...
متن کاملUnderstanding temperature and chemical potential using computer simulations
Several Monte Carlo algorithms and applications that are useful for understanding the concepts of temperature and chemical potential are discussed. We then introduce a generalization of the demon algorithm that measures the chemical potential and is suitable for simulating systems with variable particle number.
